In and around Bonn we find a unique concentration of local, regional, national, and international stakeholders actively working in the field of research and conservation of biodiversity. These institutions are characterized by their uniqueness, specialization and excellence and provide complementary profiles for a whole range of issues related to biodiversity. The recent establishment of both the IPBES-Secretariat and the Global Crop Diversity Trust (GCDT) in Bonn has further extended the international component.
BION also offers service functions, e.g., acting as an information hub, an interface between science and politics and for connecting experts. This includes the involvement of BION partners in international processes, such as IPBES, and national networks e.g. DIVERSITAS Deutschland.
Numerous and often very different institutions are present, such as international organizations (UNU, UNCCD), several Federal Ministries (BMUB, BMZ, BMEL) and Federal Offices/Agencies (BfN, BLE), approx. 15 relevant University institutions, as well as many important stakeholders coming from completely different fields of action, such as the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, the DAAD, and the City of Bonn and its networks.
Aims of BION are an increased mutual knowledge and understanding and fostering synergies among these institutions and organizations. Multidisciplinary, dynamic and specific networking aims at handling issues related to biodiversity at local, regional, national, and global levels. Through this approach BION targets a showcase improvement of interactions between society, sciences and politics.
